You should read this first!

We suggest you go slowly . . . and think! You can select several criteria that you think could work well for you from each category.

The "majors" selection is not just colleges that offer the major, but rather colleges that are recognized as being particularly strong in a particular major.

Think about what is really important to you in college. If after clicking on any search button you come up with no colleges on your list, broaden your search.

Selectivity
What about Selectivity?
Most colleges in the country aren't super selective, but the country spends a lot of time focusing on those few that are. The colleges in this database are listed in this order:

Most highly selective in the country (25 or so)
Highly selective
Very selective
Selective
Very accessible

BUT, don't get selectivity mixed up with quality of education for you. Your best college may very well not be the most selective college you can get into.

Location
What about Location?
What part of the country would be best for you? Near home? Far away? On the coast? A place with seasons? Don't forget about airplanes! It may be quicker to fly home from far away than to drive home from a neighboring state. By choosing a school farther away, you may find a less expensive college which is just right for you. And, you may broaden your horizon of opportunities for the future.

Size of School
What about Size of School?
Big? Small? Somewhere in between? Think about size in terms of what would work for you without using numbers, then think about the numbers. At large universities you can find a small group of friends. At small colleges you will probably never know all the students there. Big classes? Lots of choices? Lots of diversity? Small classes? Getting to know your professor more quickly?

Academic Programs
What about Academic Programs?
Some colleges may be a bit stronger in one major than another for various reasons. Don't assume that a college that doesn't show up on a list doesn't offer that major. This is a subjective assessment. The result of talking to many students on college campuses.

Religious Affiliation
What about Religious Affiliation?
If you are Catholic and want to attend a Catholic college, you have plenty to choose from. If you are not Catholic, it is very rare that non-Catholic students have to adjust their lifestyle much if at all. Some Christian colleges can have very "traditional" values and social atmospheres. "Other" may be Quaker, Mormon, Methodist. Don't be quick to exclude any of these. They are not that different than all the rest.
